Nice to meet you!

What do you say when someone introduces you? Here are some phrases you can use in informal, neutral and formal situations.

Informal

"Have you met Steve?"

"Hi Steve!"
"Hello Steve!"
"Good to meet you (Steve)."

Neutral

"John, I'd like you to meet Steve."

"Nice to meet you (Steve)."
"Pleased to meet you."

Formal

May I introduce you to our Managing Director, Mr Roberts?

"It's a pleasure to meet you."
"How do you do?"

(Note: If someone says "How do you do?" to you, the standard response is also "How do you do?". Your voice falls on the last "do", as it is a statement, rather than a question.

See Introducing people for a range of phrases to make introductions.

Wouldn't it be also appropriate to stress on the `you'……. I find it quite a lively and refreshing style of response to the question "How do you do?"
