How to refuse to give an answer

In some situations, you might want to avoid giving an answer to a question. For example, it is illegal in the UK to ask personal questions at job interviews. Companies can even be fined if they are caught asking questions about age, martial status or religious beliefs. So how can you respond if you are unhappy about giving an answer to a question.

1. Be polite
Even if the question is inappropriate, you have to avoid being rude or aggressive. Phrases like "I'm not going to answer that" or "That's none of your business!" are too "direct" in a work situation.

"I'm sorry, but I'd rather not talk about my personal life."
"Actually, I don't feel it's appropriate to talk about my personal life."
"I'm a little uncomfortable answering that question."

2. Focus on what you want to talk about

"Perhaps we can discuss the job responsibilities."
"I'd prefer to focus on my educational achievements."
"I'd be interested to hear about the company's expansion plans."
