Ending a phone conversation
This blog post was inspired by a question I received on the forum of our sister site, www.english-at-home.com
The question was, "How do you end a phone conversation?" Obviously, you need to be polite when you tell someone you have to end the conversation, but you also need to do it quickly and concisely, rather than taking a long time to say "good bye". Here are some useful phrases you can try:
If you called someone to ask them for help or to do something
Well, thank you very much for your help. (It's much appreciated.)
Ok. Thanks for your advice.
Thanks for helping me.
I'm very grateful for your help.
In these situations, the other person could respond with a phrase like "Not at all. Bye."
Then you can answer "Bye".
If someone calls you (and you need to end the conversation)
Well, nice talking to you!
Great to hear from you again. (if you know the person, but last spoke some time ago)
Thanks for calling. / Thanks for your call.
If you've arranged to do something in the future
OK. So I'll send you the (report / details etc) as soon as possible.
OK. So I'll wait to hear from you, then.
So I'll be receiving your estimate in a couple of days.
In order to sound friendly in all these phrases, practise smiling as you speak.
