Neutral accent

A recent article from the India Times reports on how business outsourcing companies in India are training their staff in accent neutralisation.

When companies first started outsourcing to India, representatives were asked to speak in an American accent. But when clients began to realise the mismatch in accent, many companies changed to a neutral accent, which could be understood by everyone.

“With increased globalisation of clients and customers, accent training in Indian BPOs is moving toward accent neutralisation as opposed to acquiring new accents. We believe there is a clear global business language emerging and we have adopted this philosophy for our accent training programmes,” says Aniruddha Limaye, chief people officer, WNS Global Services.

English is a language that uniquely has no set accent. If you travel around the world and visit countries and regions that speak English as a first language, you will be amazed at the variety of accents spoken by "true" English speakers. The reality is that English is English as long as you make yourself understood by English speakers.Neutral accent is something that represents Globally understandable English.

The "international" English accent is in some place it becomes "brand name", such as Singlish. I am now working in Singapore and the English accent here is very typical for Singapore. To be honest, I would like to have UK or US accent, not "Singlish". However, sometimes talking with local customer, Singlish make everyone close together… Don't know lah… It's ok lah…. Can can… :P
