What to say in an English pub
Friday is the day when many English colleagues go to the pub after work to celebrate the end of the working week. Even if you only go for a couple of drinks, it's a great opportunity to socialise with your colleagues in an informal atmosphere.
Here are some phrases you might hear and want to use.
Inviting someone to the pub
Do you fancy coming to the pub after work?
Fancy coming to the pub?
Fancy a quick half? (half = half a pint of beer)
Ordering the first round of drinks
Cultural note: British people generally order drinks in "rounds". One person buys all the drinks for the group, then another person buys the second round, and so on. If you don't buy any drinks the first week, you'd be expected to buy in following weeks.
What are you having?
What would you like?
The usual? (If a person always has the same drink.)
Ordering the second round of drinks
Same again?
Can I get you another?
Another one?
Are you ready for another one?
What are you drinking?
Offering to buy a round of drinks
Let me get this one.
Can I get this round?
Can I get you something?
Refusing a drink
I'll stick with this, thanks. (If you haven't finished your drink.)
I'm all right with this, actually. (If you haven't finished your drink.)
Actually, I have to go in a minute. Thanks anyway.
This is enough for me, thanks.
