What to wear at a job interview

Do you remember what you wore to your last interview? Did you get the job?

In the UK, appearance is as important as what you say during the interview. Here is some general advice about what to wear - and what to avoid.

Do
Wear a suit in a sober colour such as dark blue or grey.
Choose a white or blue shirt (or blouse) to go with your suit
Clean and polish your shoes
Make sure your hair looks good
Cover up large tattoos if you have them

Don't
Wear a suit in bright colours
Wear dirty or scruffy shoes
Put on too much make-up
Wear a lot of jewellery (for both men and women)
Use too much perfume or aftershave

What the colour of your shirt says about you

Different colours are said to have different psychological effects on people. For example, blue gives the impression that you are reliable and thoughtful, whereas red can mean that you're confident - or aggressive. White is a classic choice and makes you look authoritative, but women should avoid pink, which indicates lack of confidence.
