Being polite in other cultures
As people who work in international business know, different cultures have different business etiquette. I was reminded of this when I read an interesting article written by Steve Sanghi, CEO of Microchip Technology Inc.
He gives ten etiquette tips for doing business in Asia, such as exchanging business cards with both hands, avoiding using slang and making jokes, and how to use chopsticks correctly.
My favourite tip is understanding that "yes" does not mean the same thing in every country - and it certainly doesn't always mean that someone agrees with you. In my experience of working in different countries, I've also noticed that people avoid using the word "no".
If you had to compile a list of tips for people doing business in your country, what would you include?
